A wonderful Christmassy time was had by all at the annual Sacred Heart PTA Christmas Fair. Beautiful carolling from the Choir opened the festivities with tombolas, crafts, face painting, games, shopping, waffles, mulled wine and barbeque to name but a few. There was of course the most magical visit to see Santa in his grotto too! Together with proceeds from the Christmas Cards sales, we have all raised £3000 for the school!

Advent was the subject of the Year 5 assembly this week and the children presented facts about Advent around the world and activities that take place in other countries in the weeks before Christmas. Some of the children formed a human Advent Wreath and explained the reasons why certain colours are used for each candle and what these each represent. They explained the most important message about Christmas - although we all enjoy the parties and gifts and surprises, Advent is about waiting for the birth of Jesus. They particularly enjoyed sharing a Christmas song which they had learnt in Spanish which went down very well with the audience! Thank you to all the parents for helping the children learn their words so well, and also for the fantastic cakes for the cake sale at break time. Well done Year 5 for an informative and fun Assembly!

A very excited team of young scientists took part in the inaugural ISA London South Science Quiz in Caterham last week. Pupils from Y4/5 were selected for their enthusiasm for Science and knowledge and understanding extending outside the curriculum. There were 5 rounds comprising General Science Knowledge, Chemistry, Practical Engineering, Inventors and Inventions and British birds (our specialism!). Although the scores were very close between the 2 top placed teams, Sacred Heart edged away gradually to secure first place and the trophy! Congratulations Florence, Monty, Nate and Savannah.

Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 enjoyed a morning of "Road Safety" in connection with "Beep Beep Day!" We learnt how to ride our bikes safely and how important it is to hold a grownup's hand when we are near traffic and especially in the school car park. We learnt a song to help us remember (to the tune of Frosty Morning): "We hold hands to keep us safe, keep us safe, keep us safe We hold hands to keep us safe When we cross the road". We also made traffic light biscuits and role-played being a parent and holding hands with our children (teddies!) It was a really enjoyable morning, lots of fun and we all learnt a lot about being safe on the roads.

There was a rumble and a crash in Year 4 on Friday as volcanic eruptions took place. Great excitement all round as we watched and waited to see if they would erupt. Well done to Year 4 for evermore inventive versions of volcanoes - they ranged from small to enormous, cakes to to volcanoes that spewed glittery lava flows.

On Tuesday, Years 3 and 4 went on a trip to Great Dixter. During the day, the children took part in two different activity sessions. They explored the fantastic gardens at the house and then stopped to sketch some of the leaves and plants they saw. They then returned to the Education Centre where they turned their sketches into block prints. Part of the day was spent in the woods where the children enjoyed pretending they were some of Robin Hood's Merry Men. This involved hiding from St John's men in the woods and then building dens, shelters and weapons to help them survive life there. We had a wonderful day and were blessed with great weather too, a very successful trip!
