On Monday, children in Y5 went back in time to the year 793AD when the Vikings arrived on the shores of England.
Mr King (in costume!) led the class for an immersive History and Bushcraft session which gave an insight into the life of a Norseman. The class handled artefacts, objects and replicas whilst learning about equipment, clothing, weaponry, and life as a Viking. They felt the true weight of wool garments, the heft of a Viking sword and the bulk of their large shield. The class then used this learning to design their own shield pattern emblazoned with runes.
Finally, each child was given the chance to learn about fire lighting from the Viking age. Everyone had a go at traditional flint and steel, and most were successful at making sparks. All the children thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon and loved having history brought to life.
