On Monday 25th September, children in Year 6 will be going to the Houses of Parliament for a tour and a workshop. We will be travelling to and from London by coach, leaving school at 9:30 and returning by 4:30. Lunch will be provided by the school.

On arrival there will be a tour of the Palace of Westminster to include:

· The House of Commons or House of Lords chambers

· A visit to the public gallery

· Westminster Hall, the last remaining part of the original Palace

· Central Lobby, at the very heart of the Parliamentary Estate

This will be followed by a Laws and Debating Workshop which complements the work in P.S.H.E. lessons on British Values. The focus of this workshop is how Parliament makes laws. Pupils come up with ideas for bills to present to Parliament and simulate the process of passing one of these bills into law through active role play. The group participates in debates and votes along the way, and learns about the role of the Commons, the Lords and the monarch in making a law.

I understand that Parliament will be in recess on the day that we are visiting, but there will be so much to see and experience that I feel confident that the children will have a memorable and valuable experience.

Children will need to wear their school uniform, without hats. They may bring a snack in a disposable container and a disposable bottle of water. They will not need to bring any spending money with them.
